Quick Blistered Shishito Peppers

For me, shishito peppers have long held a special place in my heart, a treat I rarely pass up when given the chance! Today, I'm excited to share my passion for these peppers and a simple yet delightful recipe that brings out their best.

One of the great things about shishito peppers is their versatility. You can incorporate them into various dishes, from stir-fries to salads, or enjoy them as a standalone appetizer. Their nutritional value remains intact, regardless of how you choose to prepare them, making it easy to include them in your daily diet.

Shishito peppers aren't just a treat for your taste buds; they also offer a range of nutritional benefits. These little green gems are a rich source of essential vitamins and minerals, making them a healthy addition to your diet. They are particularly notable for their high vitamin C content, which plays a vital role in immune support, collagen production, and overall skin health. Additionally, shishito peppers provide a healthy dose of vitamin A, known for its role in maintaining good vision and skin health.

RECIPE TIP:
**The peppers are quite tasty seasoned only with salt and lime juice. However, there are many different seasonings you could add to them to change it up - - sesame oil, soy sauce/tamari/coconut aminos, various vinegars, red pepper flakes, salsa macha and so on. Go wild-it’s fun to experiment.

Here’s a rundown of the lovely vendors you can source from to create this recipe!

  • Animal Farm is a working, sustainable permaculture center located 65 miles west of Houston. They are dedicated to producing high-quality certified organic vegetables and flowers. They sell at our markets, but also have a wonderful CSA program!

  • 1836 Olive Oil grows, harvests, mills, and bottles Texas-grown olives into exceptional olive oils. Owner Kerry Thornhill started the orchard in 2012 with a desire to pay homage to her maternal grandparents. She believes in the Texas olive industry, and in supporting local agriculture and women farmers everywhere.

  • Old Country Olive Oil is owned by native Houstonian, Rita Joubran. Having been raised around her family’s olive trees and their products in Lebanon, Rita realized that she wanted to share the high-quality oil with her Houston community. She also sells delicious spices such as sumac and a wonderful olive oil soap.

Share the love! Don’t forget to share photos and tag the vendors who provided the ingredients! One of the best ways to support these local, small businesses is by spreading the word and sharing your market finds with friends and family. And of course, if you stop by the Rice Village or Heights Mercantile markets striking up conversations with the vendors will always have you walking away with wonderful recipe ideas.

Ingredients

*8oz shishito peppers

*Olive Oil

Celtic salt to taste

1-2 limes

Method

  1. Place peppers into a bowl & lightly toss in your olive oil, evenly coating the peppers {this is better than oiling the pan & then tossing in the peppers since the peppers have such an odd shape to them, they won’t evenly coat well enough}

  2. Turn the heat to medium/medium high to ensure your pan is nice and sizzly. Before you add the peppers, sprinkle some water on the pan with your fingers—you want the water to bounce & sizzle into oblivion. This is how you know it’s hot enough and ready to rock!

  3. Add the peppers. {You should immediately hear them sizzle -- if you don't, the pan isn't hot enough yet.}

  4. Sauté the peppers until they are nicely charred -- each pepper will be about 50% green and 50% charred. They should be flipped/stirred every so often, and the total cooking time will be about 10 minutes.

  5. Season generously with salt and freshly squeezed lime juice — serve hot or warm.

We hope to see you at the 1st & 3rd Sunday at Rice Village Farmers Market or 2nd & 4th Sunday at Heights Mercantile Farmers Market.
